Can you do the Red tour on your own?
| Choice | Fits | You arrange |
|---|---|---|
| Self-guided | Flexible timing and route | Vehicle, tickets, parking and meal |
| Shared Red Tour | Several central stops in one planned day | Date and hotel pickup details |
| Private Red Tour | Your party wants a private vehicle | Check route flexibility on the tour page |
Yes, if you can drive or hire a taxi for the day. There is no tour-only access: the places are open to anyone with a ticket. What you are really choosing between is logistics. The table shows how far each stop is from Göreme's bus station by road, what the Ministry of Culture and Tourism lists as the ticket, and how easy each is alone.
| Stop | Road distance from Göreme bus station | Ticket (foreign adult) | On your own? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Göreme Open-Air Museum (not on our Red tour) | About 1.3 km, 3 min | €20 | Yes. A short, uphill walk or a quick taxi; car park, café and WC listed |
| Devrent Valley | About 12–14 km, 14–15 min | No Ministry ticket found | Car or taxi only |
| Paşabağ | About 6.5 km, 9 min | €12, one ticket with Zelve | Car or taxi; the Ministry puts it about 1 km off the main road |
| Avanos | About 9 km, 10 min | No ticket; you pay for what you buy | Car or taxi; check the local bus notice |
| Zelve | About 7.6 km, 9 min | €12, one ticket with Paşabağ | Car or taxi; about 2 km off the main road; car park listed |
Distances are driving figures from the OSRM routing service, rounded, and will vary with your exact start point. The loop in the order our tour uses (Devrent, Paşabağ, Avanos, Zelve and back to Göreme) comes to roughly 41 km, or about 55 minutes of driving without stops. If you take a taxi, agree the fare and the waiting time before you set off.
What can you do without a car?
Göreme Open-Air Museum is the one stop that suits a walk. The Ministry places it 2 km east of the town centre. By road it is about 1.3 km from the bus station, and at a normal walking pace that is roughly 15 to 20 minutes, longer on the uphill stretch. This is our own estimate, not a published time.
Local buses help with getting around the area, but we could not confirm that any of them stops at Devrent, Paşabağ or Zelve. Göreme municipality publishes a Göreme to Nevşehir timetable with departures every 30 minutes, the first from Göreme at 07:30. Uçhisar's municipality publishes a similar half-hourly Uçhisar to Nevşehir timetable, and Avanos municipality has posted a notice on Avanos to Nevşehir buses, dated February 2025. Ask your hotel or the municipality which service passes the stop you want before you plan around it.
On foot alone, the other stops are not practical. Zelve is 7.6 km from Göreme by road, and we would not plan on walking it.
What do the tickets cost, and does a pass save money?
The Ministry lists foreign adult tickets of €12 for Zelve-Paşabağ and €20 for Göreme Open-Air Museum, so €32 for both. Children under 8 enter state museum and archaeological sites free; from 8 they pay the adult rate. Devrent and Avanos do not appear in the Ministry's museum listings that we checked. Our guided Red tour includes the Paşabağ and Zelve ticket, but not Göreme.
Two passes exist. The Ministry's MuseumPass Türkiye costs €165, is valid for 15 days from the first visit, covers more than 350 sites and allows one entry per site. A separate Museum Pass Cappadocia covers sites in Nevşehir and Aksaray; check its current price on the Ministry e-ticket portal (official ticket prices). Both the Göreme and Zelve pages carry the Cappadocia pass notice, but confirm the covered list when you buy. Compare the €32 total for these two sites with the current pass price before buying. Do the sums if you add more paid sites.
What opening hours should you plan around?
These are summer hours; winter hours are shorter — check the official page before you go.
The Ministry's Zelve-Paşabağ page lists the site as open daily from 08:00 to 18:00, with the ticket office closing at 17:15, and Göreme Open-Air Museum from 08:00 to 17:45. The Ministry's Turkish Museums pages list seasonal hours instead, closing at 19:00 from 1 April to 1 October and at 17:00 in winter, so check the schedule for your date and arrive well before the ticket office closes.
On our tour timings, the stops add up to about 2 hours 50 minutes (20 minutes at Devrent, 45 at Paşabağ, 45 at the Avanos pottery workshop and an hour at Zelve), plus the 55 minutes of driving. Add lunch and time for breaks. A self-drive day can be quicker than our 8-hour programme if you skip the workshops.
How would you plan the Red loop yourself?
If you drive, a tighter order than our tour's saves time, because you do not need to fit a group's lunch and workshop stops. Start at Zelve when it opens at 08:00, then go to Paşabağ, which is under 2 km further on. Continue to Devrent Valley, then to Avanos for lunch and a look at the pottery shops, and finish back in Göreme. In OSRM's figures that order is about 33 km and 46 minutes of driving, against about 41 km and 55 minutes in our tour's order.
Keep Göreme Open-Air Museum for another morning or the end of the day, within its opening hours. Leave Devrent for when you have light and energy to spare: it is a short stop to look at weathered rock shapes, with no caves or churches, so it is the easiest one to drop if time is tight.
What about a rental car or a scooter?
A car gives you the most freedom: you can reach Zelve when it opens and stay as long as you like. Parking is listed at both Göreme and Zelve. Check the rental terms for your licence and insurance, and read them closely before taking a scooter or quad onto unpaved tracks. Zelve has steep paths that need shoes with grip, whichever way you arrive.
If you rent, build the day around the opening hours above. If you prefer not to drive in an unfamiliar area, a taxi for the day or a tour removes that part.
What does the guided Red tour add?
The shared Red tour collects you from your hotel between 09:30 and 10:20, depending on the area, and visits Devrent, Paşabağ, Avanos and Zelve in one loop. It lasts about 8 hours, with roughly 2.5 km of walking on uneven, partly cobbled ground. The Paşabağ and Zelve ticket, a licensed English-speaking guide, lunch and transport are included. Göreme Open-Air Museum is not.
You also get two craft stops. The Avanos pottery workshop shows a potter at a kick wheel using red clay from the Kızılırmak river, and the Carpet Weaving Education Center shows hand-knotted carpets and silk. Each lasts about 30 to 45 minutes, finished pieces are on sale, and there is no obligation to buy. These stops are part of the programme, so if you prefer a day without workshop visits, going independently is the more flexible choice. The private Red tour follows the same route at your own pace and also includes the pottery and carpet visits.
When does a guided Red tour make more sense?
Choose the guided tour if you have one day, do not want to drive, or would rather not work out parking and tickets. It also suits you if you want the places explained as you go, such as the hermit chapel in Paşabağ and the cave village in Zelve.
Go independent if you have a car, want a long morning at Zelve, prefer to choose your own lunch, or prefer not to include workshop visits. A mix works well too: take the guided day for the distant stops and walk to Göreme Open-Air Museum on another morning. Our how many days in Cappadocia guide shows where that fits, and the Red, Green or South comparison helps you pick between routes.
Reserve the Red tour and we confirm it, then send your exact pickup time the day before. You pay in cash on the day, in euros or US dollars, with no deposit and no card. Cancellation is free up to 72 hours before the tour, and same-day booking is open until 07:30. All our Cappadocia tours run every day. Staying two days? The Red and South two-day tour adds the South tour route, with the Çavuşin hike and Özkonak Underground City, on the second day.
