How many days in Cappadocia do you need?
For most first visits, two full days of touring is the most practical length, because the region is spread over a wide area and each day tour covers a different part of it. The table below matches the number of days to the tours we run, in the order we would book them.
| Days | Tours | What you get | On foot and on the road |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | One of Red, South or Green | One landscape, done properly | Red about 2.5 km on foot; South about 3 km; Green 3.5–4 km plus about 2¾ hours of driving |
| 2 | Red, then South (one two-day booking) | Rock valleys, a cave village, an underground city, a village hike | About 2.5 km, then about 3 km |
| 3 | Red, South, then Green | Adds the Ihlara Valley walk, Kaymaklı and Selime | Green is the longest day, about 9 hours |
| 4 | Red, South, Green and one open day | Weather buffer, Göreme Open-Air Museum, or a balloon flight you arrange yourself | The open day is yours to set |
What you give up is just as useful to know. With two days you will not reach the Ihlara Valley or Kaymaklı, which are on the Green tour. With three days you will still not see Göreme Open-Air Museum unless you add it yourself, because none of our day tours includes it. Four days is the first length that covers all three routes with a day in hand.
These are days of touring, not nights. Arrive the evening before your first tour, because pickup starts at 09:30. Our airport arrival guide covers how many nights to book around them.
What does each of our day tours involve?
Each tour is a full day of about 8 to 9 hours, with hotel pickup between 09:30 and 10:20, a licensed English-speaking guide, lunch and the entrance tickets for the sites on the route. Group tours are limited to 14 guests. Each route also runs as a private tour with your own guide and vehicle.
| Route | Main stops | Time out | Walking | Workshop stops |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Red | Devrent Valley, Paşabağ, Avanos, Zelve | About 8 hours | About 2.5 km in short stretches; Zelve has the steepest paths | Pottery workshop and Carpet Weaving Education Center |
| South | Old Çavuşin, Özkonak Underground City, Pigeon Valley and Ortahisar viewpoints | About 8 hours | About 3 km, partly uphill | Onyx and leather workshops |
| Green | Göreme panorama, Kaymaklı Underground City, Ihlara Valley, Selime Monastery | About 9 hours | 3.5–4 km along the Melendiz river | Onyx and leather workshops |
Every route includes two workshop visits, of about 30 to 45 minutes each. They are part of the programme and part of how the tours work, and there is no obligation to buy anything. If a day runs late, the guide may shorten them.
Is our South tour the same as other companies' South tour?
Not necessarily. Colour names are not standardised in Cappadocia, so check the stops rather than the label. On our tours, South means Old Çavuşin, Özkonak Underground City and the Ortahisar and Pigeon Valley viewpoints. Green means Kaymaklı, the Ihlara Valley and Selime.
Many operators use "South" or "South Cappadocia" for the Ihlara Valley route with an underground city, and call the same day "Green". Some also sell "Blue" or "Yellow" tours, and a Red tour elsewhere may include Göreme Open-Air Museum, which ours does not. If a listing says "South" and you want the Ihlara gorge, read the itinerary before you book, here or anywhere else.
What should you do with one day?
Pick the tour that matches how you like to travel, because you cannot repeat a landscape you skip. Red is the classic fairy-chimney day with short walks and the least effort. South suits you if you want a village hike and an underground city without the long drive. Green is the walking day, with the Ihlara riverside path and low tunnels at Kaymaklı. Our Cappadocia in one day guide plans that single day hour by hour.
Our Red, Green or South comparison sets the three side by side, so we will not repeat it here. If you are unsure, start with Red.
What works for two, three and four days?
Two days: Red first, then South. The two do not repeat each other, and one booking covers both. Our two days without a balloon guide covers evenings and packing. If you would rather spend the second day at Ihlara, book Red and Green as two separate day tours.
Three days: add Green last. It has the longest drive and the longest walk, so it is easier once you know the area. The which tour on which day guide explains the order in more detail.
Four days: keep one day unscheduled. Use it for Göreme Open-Air Museum, a late start after a balloon flight, or as a weather buffer.
Coming from Istanbul? Our Istanbul and Cappadocia trip guide shows how to split the days between the two and what happens after you book a package.
Where does a balloon flight fit?
We do not sell balloon flights, and you do not need one for any of these plans to work. Balloons are run by licensed balloon companies, and flights go ahead only when the civil aviation authority's Nevşehir office has assessed the weather and judged conditions safe.
Because flights can be cancelled at short notice, a spare morning helps. Flights leave around sunrise, before our 09:30 pickup, so a guest who books one independently can still join a tour afterwards, provided the flight is back in time. Keep a buffer on the morning after as well, in case yours moves a day. We cannot say how likely a cancellation is on any given date.
Where does Göreme Open-Air Museum fit?
Our Red tour does not include it, and neither do South or Green. Plan it as a separate half-day, ideally on your open day. The Ministry lists the foreign adult ticket at €20; children under 8 enter state museum and archaeological sites free, and from 8 they pay the adult rate. The museum is only about 1.3 km by road from Göreme's bus station. Opening hours change with the season, so check them for your date. Our guide to doing the Red tour on your own or with a guide covers the hours, distances and tickets in detail.
Does the plan change with children or slower walkers?
Not the number of days, but the choice of routes. On our tours, infants under 2 are not charged, and children under 8 enter state museum and archaeological sites free; from 8 they pay the adult rate, although a seat is charged at the adult rate. Red has the shortest walks. Green includes low, narrow tunnels at Kaymaklı and is not suitable for anyone who is claustrophobic or has real difficulty walking. The private versions let the guide adjust the pace.
How do you plan around flights and Istanbul?
If you fly into Kayseri or Nevşehir, arrive the night before and stay in Göreme, Uçhisar, Ürgüp or Avanos; our airport to Göreme transfer guide compares the drive times and options. Our Cappadocia tours from Kayseri and Nevşehir airport page lists the tours that suit an air arrival.
From Istanbul, our Istanbul page puts the flight at about 1 hour 15 minutes, and the Istanbul to Cappadocia tours include flights and transfers. A one-day trip means a pickup around 05:00 and a long day. The packages on our 2 and 3 day Cappadocia tours page add a cave-hotel night: two days pair Red with Green, and three days cover Red, South and Green. Our flight or bus guide compares the two ways of getting there.
How do you book a day tour?
Day tours need no deposit and no card. You reserve, we confirm, and you pay in cash on the day, in euros or US dollars. Same-day booking is open until 07:30, so a decision over breakfast still works. Cancellation is free up to 72 hours before the tour. Send your hotel name and a WhatsApp number, and we message the exact pickup time the day before. See all Cappadocia tours.
