Infants under 2 travel with us free, and the Ministry of Culture and Tourism lets children under 8 into state museums and archaeological sites free.

Which tour is easiest for young children?

The Red Tour, because it has no underground city and the least walking of our three Cappadocia day tours. The table uses our own itineraries, plus the Ministry of Culture and Tourism for Kaymaklı.

Sources: our Red and Green Tour itineraries, checked 29 October 2026; Kaymaklı from muze.gov.tr, fetched 29 October 2026.

The South Tour sits between the two on walking: about 3 km on foot by our itinerary, some of it uphill at Çavuşin. Check the stop list on the South Tour page before you choose it with a young child.

What our Red Tour does not include: it does not go inside the Göreme Open-Air Museum, and it has no underground city. Our Red itinerary has two workshop stops, a pottery workshop in Avanos and a carpet weaving centre, about 30–45 minutes each, with no obligation to buy. Read the stops in order on the Red Tour page.

How much do children pay?

Infants under 2 travel free. Children aged 2–7 have their own price, shown as soon as you enter your travellers; vehicle seats and flights are charged at the adult rate.

Entrance tickets follow the state rules, not ours. The Ministry of Culture and Tourism directive says children under 8 enter state museums and archaeological sites free, and from age 8 they pay the adult rate (muze.gov.tr directive, checked 25 October 2026). As an example, the foreign visitor ticket for Kaymaklı is €13 on the Ministry tariff page, checked 29 October 2026; that page shows no effective date, so confirm it before you travel. An 8-year-old pays that adult rate.

Can toddlers go into the underground city?

They can, but it is a poor fit. The Ministry describes Kaymaklı's passages as "low, narrow and sloping", and four floors have been unearthed. A stroller is no use underground, so you would carry a small child through the tunnels.

The simple fix is for one adult to wait outside with the child while the other goes in. If you would rather skip tunnels entirely, take the Red Tour. If your party wants an underground city and is unsure which one, our guide to Kaymaklı or Özkonak covers knees, mobility and children in more detail.

Kaymaklı is open 08:00–18:00 and the ticket office closes at 17:15, according to the Ministry page above (fetched 29 October 2026).

Strollers, car seats and naps: what should I plan for?

Bring a baby carrier rather than a stroller. Strollers are awkward at Zelve, where the paths are uneven, and a carrier leaves your hands free; that is the advice on our private Red Tour page.

We do not list car seats or child seats on our tour pages, so do not assume one is in the vehicle. Message us on WhatsApp before you book and we will check for your date. The same goes for age: tell us your child's age and we will tell you which tour fits.

Naps are easier on a private tour, because lunch is taken when it suits your party. On a group day the programme follows the group's timing.

Is a private tour better than a group tour with children?

Choose private if your child still naps in the day, tires quickly or needs frequent stops. Choose the group tour if your children walk comfortably and you are happy to keep to a shared schedule.

On the private Red Tour the guide can drop you close to each entrance, which saves small legs the walk from the car park, and it generally suits both children and grandparents. Private lunch is at a local restaurant in Avanos, taken when it suits your party. See the stops on the private Red Tour page, or read our private or group tour guide for the full comparison.

Grandparents travelling tooRed Tour, group or private

For grandparents the group Red Tour is usually manageable too: about 2.5 km on uneven, partly cobbled ground by our itinerary, with Zelve the steepest part, so take it slowly there.

What about lunch for picky eaters or allergies?

The Red Tour lunch is an open buffet that usually includes vegetarian dishes, so a picky eater can normally find something plain. Tell us any allergies when you book so we can pass them on.

On a private tour you also choose when lunch happens, which helps when a child gets hungry early.

Who should skip the Green Tour?

Skip the Green Tour if your child is a toddler, if anyone in your party is claustrophobic, or if anyone finds real walking difficult. By our itinerary the day is about 9 hours with about 2¾ hours of driving; Kaymaklı has low, narrow passages, and Ihlara means stairs down into the canyon and then 3.5–4 km on foot, with a short scramble at Selime.

The Green Tour page has the full stop order. Older children who like walking and a long day often enjoy it; for everyone else, the Red Tour is the easier first choice. Our family tours page collects the trips that work with children across Turkey.

We do not sell balloon flights, so none of these days includes one.

How do I ask about my children before booking?

Send us your dates and the children's ages on WhatsApp, and we will tell you which tour fits and check anything not listed on the tour page, such as a child seat. The booking box on each tour page shows the live price for your party, children included.
