The main Ephesus archaeological site

The İzmir Provincial Directorate of Culture and Tourism lists Ephesus Ancient City at €40 for foreign visitors, and says the main ticket includes the Digital Experience Museum. That is the published 2026 price. Prices can change, so check again before you go.

Most visitors need a few hours for the main route. You can see the Library of Celsus, the Great Theatre and the principal streets and monuments, but this is a large open site with uneven paving and exposed areas. Bring water and shoes suitable for stone paths; ticket price is only one part of planning the visit.

You can buy an Ephesus e-ticket on the official Ministry portal; check which product and date it covers. Tickets can be digital or printed, and you must keep yours for the whole visit. If you buy online, save the ticket to your phone and take a screenshot in case the mobile signal at the site is weak. Keep it handy until you leave the site.

At the gate, follow the posted process and payment options. Ticket sales are in Turkish lira, with euro prices converted at the previous business day’s Central Bank rate, so the euro tariff you see online is a reference price. Carry a little cash and a card for the gate, in case the process on the day differs from what you read online.

Terrace Houses: a separate €15 ticket

The Terrace Houses, also called Yamaç Evler, are a separate ticketed area within the Ephesus archaeological complex. The İzmir tariff lists them at €15 for foreign visitors. Budget this as an add-on to the €40 main site ticket rather than assuming access is part of the standard entry. Decide on your add-ons before you arrive, so you are not choosing in the queue.

Inside the protected structure are Roman domestic spaces with wall decoration, mosaics and architectural details that help explain elite household life. A protective roof shelters the remains, but the experience involves close inspection of rooms, walkways and stairs. Allow around 45–60 minutes if you want to look carefully instead of passing through quickly.

The Terrace Houses are especially worthwhile if you like archaeology, domestic history or conservation work. They are easy to omit if your port call is short, if you are already tired from the main site, or if the group includes someone who would find stairs and enclosed areas difficult. The main streets remain a substantial visit on their own.

Nearby tickets: what is separate

The House of Virgin Mary sits away from the main archaeological site, on Mount Koressos. It is not a Ministry of Culture and Tourism site, so its admission fee is set separately and paid at the gate. We do not quote a price; check locally before you travel.

The Ephesus Museum in Selçuk is another separate stop. The İzmir tariff lists it at €10 for foreign visitors. Whether it makes sense depends on your interest and time: the museum helps contextualize finds from the area, but it is not a substitute for walking the ancient site itself.

The remains of the Temple of Artemis are a separate archaeological stop with its own access conditions; often visitors treat it as a brief look rather than a long visit. Do not assume the Ephesus ticket includes every attraction in Selçuk. Ask at the ticket office or check the current official site entry before adding a place to your day.

Children under 8 and proof of age

Under the Ministry’s directive, children under 8 enter state museum and archaeological sites free; from 8 they pay the adult rate. Bring a passport or other official identification that shows the child’s age, since staff can verify eligibility at purchase or entry.

This is a Ministry-site rule, not a blanket rule for every attraction in the region. The House of Virgin Mary is outside the Ministry system, and its separately set charge may follow its own procedure. If you are visiting multiple sites, ask which ticket desk applies the exemption before joining a queue.

Families should also plan for the physical side of the visit. Ephesus has long stretches without much shade, uneven ground and a lot to look at. A light hat, water and a slower pace often help more than trying to squeeze every ticketed add-on into one morning.

MuseumPass Türkiye: is it worth it?

MuseumPass Türkiye costs €165, is valid for 15 days from your first museum visit and allows one entry to each covered museum. It covers more than 350 museums and archaeological sites of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. Use the official valid-sites list to decide whether the pass matches your own itinerary.

The pass is not automatically a bargain for everyone. If your only Ministry visit is Ephesus, buying the €40 site ticket costs less than the €165 pass. If you plan to visit several covered sites over two weeks, compare those admission prices with the pass and account for excluded areas or separate attractions.

The Ministry’s general directive also says passes may not apply to venues with restricted capacity, fragile fabric or premium fees. Check the specific site listing rather than assuming a pass opens every gate or special section. Current product terms are the authority for a purchase.

Which TurkeyVia tours include tickets

Our Ephesus day tour from Istanbul by plane includes entrance fees to Ephesus, the House of Virgin Mary and Artemis. Our private Ephesus and Terrace Houses shore tour also includes all entrance fees. Check the booking details before you confirm.

For other shore excursions, do not infer ticket coverage from the fact that a tour visits the site. TurkeyVia’s general shore-tour terms say tickets are not included by default; you can add them at the official price or pay at the gate. Individual product pages may explicitly include tickets, so use the named product’s list rather than a broad assumption.

If you prefer buying your own tickets, remember to include time for purchase and checks in the itinerary. With a ship call, the driver’s route, ticket queue and walk through the site all share a fixed return window. A ticket saved online does not remove the need to leave enough time to reach the port.
