How much walking is Ephesus?
About two hours on foot: the four walking stops in our itinerary add up to roughly 115 minutes. Our private Ephesus-only tour takes 3–4 hours in total, with no lunch. Here is the whole tour, segment by segment, from our own itinerary:
| Segment | Time |
|---|---|
| Drive from the port to the upper (Magnesian) gate | 25 min |
| State Agora and Odeon (on foot) | 25 min |
| Curetes Street (on foot) | 35 min |
| Library of Celsus (on foot) | 30 min |
| Great Theatre, then out through the lower gate where the vehicle waits (on foot) | 25 min |
| Carpet centre, seated (no obligation to buy) | 30–45 min |
| Drive back to the port | 25 min |
| Back at the pier | at least 60 min before all-aboard |

Our longer private route adds Mary's House and the Temple of Artemis and takes 4–5 hours (our itinerary). The ruins are open 08:00 to 18:00 and the ticket office closes at 17:30, according to the Ministry of Culture and Tourism page for Ephesus. On a cruise day your all-aboard time decides how much of that you can use.
What our private Ephesus-only tour does not include: lunch, Mary's House or the Temple of Artemis (those are on the longer route). You can see the route and the current price on the private Ephesus-only tour page.
Is it downhill all the way?
Mostly, because of where our private routes start. Both our private Ephesus itineraries enter at the upper gate and follow the marble street downhill, about 1.5 km, to the Library of Celsus and the Great Theatre (our itinerary). You then leave by the lower gate, where the vehicle waits, so you do not walk back uphill to the car.
"Downhill" does not mean smooth. The marble is worn and uneven, and where it is polished it can be slippery, especially when wet. There is little shade for most of the walk. Wear shoes with real grip, not smooth-soled sandals, and bring water and a hat. The Odeon, early in the route, is small and steep, so take it slowly or watch from the top if the steps look like too much.
Can I visit Ephesus with a wheelchair or rollator?
We cannot confirm that, so please ask before you book. The official Ministry page for Ephesus lists an audio guide but gives no accessibility details. The surfaces are ancient stone, and we have not confirmed wheelchair access or a rollator-friendly route with the site, so we will not tell you it works.
You can contact the site through the official phone number or email on the muze.gov.tr Ephesus page, or message us on WhatsApp and we will check for you before you commit to anything. Reserve now, pay your guide in cash on the day (US dollars, euros or British pounds) — no deposit, no card needed. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before the tour.
What about the Terrace Houses and Mary's House?
Both add effort, so decide with your own legs in mind. The Terrace Houses are an optional extra with a separate ticket: €15 for foreign visitors on the Ministry tariff, checked 29 October 2026, not covered by the Müzekart. Inside there are stairs and close interior walkways, so ask us before you add them. Our guide to whether the Terrace Houses are worth it covers the visit in more detail.
Mary's House is on our longer private route. In our itinerary the visit takes about 45 minutes, and the chapel sits in pine woods roughly 7 km above Selçuk. We have no verified official ticket price for it, so we do not quote one.
How do you keep us on time for all-aboard?
We bring you back to the pier at least 60 minutes before all-aboard. Back-to-ship guarantee: we always get you back to your ship, at least 60 minutes before all-aboard. If time is short, we shorten the programme rather than risk your ship, which matters most for slower walkers.
The minimum port stay we ask for is 5 hours for the Ephesus-only route and 6.5 hours for the longer one (our tour data). If your ship is in port for less, message us before booking and we will tell you honestly what fits.
You meet your guide at the cruise terminal exit at Ege Port Kuşadası, where you will see a TurkeyVia sign. We confirm the meeting time on WhatsApp 48 and 24 hours before your call.
Group or private for slower walkers?
Private lets you set the pace. On a private tour it is only your party, with your own guide and vehicle, timed to your ship, so you can spend longer on Curetes Street, sit when you need to, and move on when you are ready. Our shared group tour has one guide and minibus on a fixed route for up to 14 guests, so the pace is shared. We have not confirmed whether the group route runs upper-to-lower, so if your walking is limited, ask before choosing it.
The private Ephesus-only tour is the shorter option. The longer private route with Mary's House and Artemis covers more but needs more time and more walking. The shared group tour is the fixed-route alternative. Every Kuşadası option is on our Kuşadası shore excursions page.
Who should not book this?
Anyone who cannot manage about two hours on uneven stone and has not had a wheelchair or assisted route confirmed. Ephesus is a real archaeological site, not a paved park. If you use a wheelchair or rollator, or long stretches on slippery marble worry you, message us on WhatsApp first and we will check what is possible before you book. We would rather tell you now than on the pier.
