What are your options for getting from Ege Port to Ephesus?
| Option | What we know | Planning point |
|---|---|---|
| Taxi | Direct trip can be arranged | Agree wait, return point and fare or meter |
| Dolmuş | Port operator confirms route 5 between port and bus station | No official cruise-day service to an Ephesus gate |
| Shore tour | Route and return time are set out on the tour page | Compare itineraries and tickets |
You have four: a taxi from the port exit, dolmuş minibuses via Selçuk, an independent tour, or your cruise line's own excursion. They differ mainly in who carries the timing risk and how many arrangements you make yourself.
| Option | How it works | Suits | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Taxi | Taxis wait at stands near the port; the port describes "a fixed round trip price" paid at the end | Couples or groups on a call of 8 hours or more | Agree price, waiting time and drop-off gate before you leave |
| Dolmuş | Dolmuş no. 5 to the Friday Market, a Selçuk dolmuş to Selçuk bus station, then a taxi or another dolmuş to the site | Confident independent travellers on a long call | Three legs each way and no timetable we can verify |
| Tour | Guide meets you at the terminal exit; the vehicle stays with you | Short calls, families, first visits | Group tours include workshop stops, so choose the format |
| Cruise-line excursion | Booked through the ship | Guests who want the ship's own arrangements | Booked in advance, on the line's terms |
The port operator's transportation page is the source for the taxi and dolmuş routes. It gives no fares, and neither do we.
Is a taxi the simplest way to get to Ephesus?
Yes, if you agree the terms before you set off. Ege Port lists the drive to Ephesus at about 20 minutes. Allow extra time for traffic and the port exit; our own planning uses roughly 25 minutes.
Before you get in, settle five things:
- A round-trip price, stated clearly, rather than discovering the fare at the end.
- Waiting time. Plan about two hours inside Ephesus, plus tickets and queues.
- Which gate you start at and where the driver will meet you (see the gate section below).
- The latest departure time for the drive back, set at least 60 minutes before all-aboard.
- That the car is a registered taxi. The UK Foreign Office advises noting the registration number and making sure the fare is metered; app-based and pre-booked taxis are also widely available.
We do not quote a fare: figures online disagree, and neither the port nor a municipal tariff gives one for this trip. Ask two drivers and compare like with like: same route, same waiting time, same stops.
Can you get to Ephesus by dolmuş from the port?
Yes, but it is a chain rather than a single ride. The port's transport page says to take dolmuş no. 5 to the Friday Market, then the Selçuk dolmuş to Selçuk bus station, and finally a taxi or another dolmuş to Ephesus. The return repeats the sequence.
Each change adds waiting, and we cannot give you a timetable to rely on. A local operator's gate guide, updated in April 2026, says dolmuş serve the lower gate from Selçuk but not the upper gate, which affects where you start walking. We cannot give you a current fare, so ask the driver before you board.
The dolmuş suits a long call, a modest budget and a relaxed attitude to connections. It is a poor fit for a short call, because a missed connection on the way back is the one thing you cannot absorb.
How much time do you need?
Count from docking to all-aboard, not to the ship's departure. We base our planning figures on our own shore tours: time to get off the ship, a return to the pier at least 60 minutes before all-aboard, about 25 minutes each way by road and about two hours on foot inside Ephesus.
| Call length (docking to all-aboard) | Time after 60 min return buffer | Time after two drives (about 20–25 min each) | What realistically fits |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6 hours | 5 h | about 4 h 10–20 min | Ephesus only. A taxi can work; skip the dolmuş chain. Our private Ephesus-only tour fits calls from about 5 hours |
| 8 hours | 7 h | about 6 h 10–20 min | Ephesus, the House of the Virgin Mary and lunch. A taxi with a waiting driver works; the dolmuş is tight. Our 4–5 hour private tour needs about 6½ hours |
| 10 hours | 9 h | about 8 h 10–20 min | Add the Terrace Houses or Şirince. The dolmuş becomes realistic, with a margin in hand. Our longest private tours need about 7½ hours |
The remaining time has to cover tickets, queues, the walk, toilets and any meal. On a call of under about 5 hours, a guided Ephesus visit with the return buffer is too tight; spend the day in Kuşadası instead, or send us your docking and all-aboard times and we will say honestly what fits. Our Ephesus timing and tickets guide covers how long each part of the site takes.
Ege Port lists the drive to the House of the Virgin Mary at about 25 minutes, so it changes the route as well as the visit. The Kuşadası cruise port guide gives distances to the other nearby sites.
Do you need a tour for Ephesus from a cruise ship?
Not always, and we say so plainly. Going independently tends to work when all of the following are true:
- The call is 8 hours or longer.
- You want Ephesus on its own, or Ephesus plus one stop.
- You are happy to agree a taxi price and buy tickets at the gate.
- You are comfortable keeping an eye on the clock yourself.
A tour earns its place in other situations:
- Short calls. At 6 hours there is little slack. A plan built backwards from your all-aboard time removes the arithmetic. Royal Caribbean states that its ship will wait for guests on its own excursions but "will not wait for any guest faring on their own". Check your own line's rule.
- Our back-to-ship guarantee. On our tours you are back at the pier at least 60 minutes before all-aboard; if time runs short, the programme is shortened, not the return.
- The one-way walk. Ephesus is easiest walked downhill, starting and finishing at different gates. A tour vehicle simply waits at the far end.
- Two sites in one trip. Adding the House of the Virgin Mary, the Terrace Houses or lunch means more stops and more waiting time to negotiate with a driver.
- Heat and queues. The UK Foreign Office notes that extreme temperatures can affect many areas of Türkiye in summer, and our tour pages note that ticket queues can be long on cruise days.
Be aware that our group tour includes a carpet weaving centre and a leather workshop, and our private Ephesus tours include a carpet weaving stop, each with no obligation to buy. If you want no workshop time at all, going independently is the cleaner option. Compare the current price on the tour page with taxi quotes for your party size.
Which gate should you use, and why does it matter?
Ephesus slopes, so the easier plan is to enter at the upper gate and walk down. Our private tours do exactly that: a start at the upper (Magnesian) gate, about 1.5 km downhill past the Odeon and the Temple of Hadrian to the Library of Celsus and the Great Theatre, with the vehicle waiting at the lower gate. Our guide to how much walking Ephesus involves times each segment.
With a taxi, either the driver drops you at the upper gate and meets you at the lower gate, or you start at the lower gate and walk back uphill. The same local gate guide says taxi stands operate at both gates and that the lower gate has the larger car park, with cafés. Confirm the meeting point with your driver before you walk in.
The Ministry of Culture and Tourism lists the site as open every day from 08:00 to 18:00, with the ticket office closing at 17:30, so ship days rarely run into the limit.
What about the House of the Virgin Mary, the Terrace Houses and tickets?
Each is a separate decision. The House of the Virgin Mary sits about 7 km above Selçuk, away from the ancient city, so it is a second drive and a second ticket. The Terrace Houses are a separate ticketed area inside Ephesus; our Terrace Houses guide helps you decide whether they suit your call. Our Ephesus entrance fees guide lists the published ticket prices and what children pay.
On the independent routes you buy tickets at the gate. On our tours entrance tickets are optional: add them when you book or pay at the sites.
How should you decide?
Work through it in this order:
- Take your docking and all-aboard times and allow time to get ashore and keep the 60-minute buffer.
- Subtract about 50 minutes for the two drives.
- Compare what is left with the table above.
- With 8 hours or more and Ephesus alone in mind, a pre-agreed taxi is a sound plan.
- With a shorter call, or more than one stop, a tour is worth comparing.
Our Kuşadası shore excursions page matches tours to call length, including the private Ephesus-only tour for shorter calls, the private Ephesus, Virgin Mary and Artemis tour and the group Ephesus, Virgin Mary and Artemis tour. You reserve now and pay your guide in cash on the day, in US dollars, euros or British pounds, with no deposit and no card. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before the tour, and you receive a full refund if the cruise line cancels or skips the port call. Not sure your ship's timing works? Our guide to Kuşadası excursions by cruise line lists typical call lengths, or send us your ship name, date and a WhatsApp number and we will tell you honestly what fits, including when a taxi is enough.
