Where do cruise ships dock in Kuşadası?
| Call plan | What fits |
|---|---|
| Short | Port area and nearby town walk |
| Medium | Ephesus main site with direct return, if schedule allows |
| Longer | Ephesus plus one confirmed extra stop |
Most passengers arrive alongside at Ege Port Kuşadası and walk off the ship. The port also allows anchorage and tenders, so follow your ship’s instructions if it anchors. Scala Nuova Village is inside the port gate; the town centre begins at the gate, and Kaleiçi old town is about 10 minutes on foot, or 0.8 km.
For a pre-arranged excursion, the guide meets you at the terminal exit with a name sign. If your ship anchors, the meeting point is the tender landing. Keep the agreed meeting details and the ship’s all-aboard time available when you leave the terminal. The port operator’s Ege Port information describes the passenger terminal, Scala Nuova and the port’s berth and anchorage arrangements.
If you want a low-effort stop, the port itself and the nearby old town may be enough. A visit to Ephesus is a separate drive and should be planned around the return time rather than treated as an extension of a port stroll. See the Kuşadası shore excursions page for current options.
How far is Ephesus from Ege Port?
Ege Port lists the drive to Ephesus at about 20 minutes; allow extra time for traffic and leaving the port area. That makes Kuşadası the closest cruise port to the ancient city, but the road estimate is only one part of the day: allow for getting ashore, the site visit, any additional stop and the journey back.
Count from docking to all-aboard. Ephesus on its own takes about 3–4 hours pier to pier, so it needs a call of about 5 hours once you add getting ashore and the 60-minute return buffer. Adding the House of the Virgin Mary, the Temple of Artemis and lunch needs about 6½ hours on a private tour (7½ hours on the group tour), and adding the Terrace Houses, Şirince or St John’s Basilica about 7½ hours. If you are weighing a taxi or the dolmuş against a tour, our port to Ephesus transport guide works through the same arithmetic for going independently.
A standard visit enters at the upper gate and walks down Curetes Street to the Library of Celsus and the Great Theatre, about two to three hours on worn marble with little shade. The official Ephesus page identifies the site and gives current visitor information. For detailed timing and ticket context, read our Ephesus from Kuşadası timing guide.
Which nearby stop is worth adding?
Choose one additional stop based on your interests and call length. Ege Port lists the drive to the House of the Virgin Mary at about 25 minutes and to Şirince at about 30 minutes. Both add a separate drive beyond Ephesus, so check the route and return time before including either.
The Terrace Houses sit within the Ephesus visit but have a separate ticket. They suit visitors who want to see Roman domestic spaces as well as the streets and public monuments. The Terrace Houses guide can help you decide whether that extra section fits your priorities. Entrance is €15 for foreign visitors in 2026, in addition to Ephesus at €40, according to the current official tariff.
Priene and Didyma are longer regional outings. Do not combine distant sites simply because the map makes them look close. Let the ship’s all-aboard time and required return margin decide how far to travel.
What fits in a short or long call?
Keep a shorter call focused. Counted from docking to all-aboard, after allowing time to get ashore and keeping the 60-minute return buffer:
- Under 5 hours: too tight for a guided Ephesus visit; stay in town or send us your times first.
- 5–6½ hours: Ephesus only, about 3–4 hours pier to pier.
- 6½–7½ hours: Ephesus, the House of the Virgin Mary, the Temple of Artemis and lunch on a private tour.
- 7½ hours or more: the group tour, or a private tour adding the Terrace Houses, Şirince or St John’s Basilica, or keep the spare time for town.
Your line’s published hours are arrival to departure; all-aboard is earlier. Our guide to Kuşadası excursions by cruise line lists the calls we track this season and how long each ship stays.
Your own ship’s published times still decide the plan.
Use the time between the ship’s arrival and all-aboard, not a general estimate of how long a sightseeing route takes. The guide plans the return to the pier at least 60 minutes before all-aboard. If the ship is delayed, the guide waits and reorders or shortens the plan at no extra charge. A late start is a reason to simplify the route, not to remove the pier buffer.
Is it easy to walk around town after sightseeing?
Yes. The town centre is at the port gate, the Scala Nuova shopping area is inside the gate, and Kaleiçi is about 10 minutes away on foot. That makes a short walk realistic after returning from an excursion, provided you leave enough time to reboard.
Kaleiçi offers a compact old-town contrast to the large archaeological site outside the city. If your call is short, you can make the town your main plan rather than travelling to Ephesus. If you visit Ephesus first, keep an eye on the time as you return to the terminal; the port gate is convenient, but boarding still follows your ship’s timetable.
For a last stroll before boarding, Pigeon Island (Güvercinada), with its small stone fortress, is joined to the seafront by a causeway a short walk south of the port. Wear shoes with grip for either plan: the marble streets of Ephesus are polished smooth and the old-town lanes are steep in places. What should I know about tickets and tour arrangements?
Shore excursion prices are shown without site tickets. You may add tickets at the official price when booking or pay at the gate. For the 2026 foreign-visitor tariff, Ephesus is €40 and the Terrace Houses are €15. The Temple of Artemis, now a single re-erected column in a marshy field outside Selçuk, is free to see.
The shared tour visits Ephesus, the House of the Virgin Mary and the Temple of Artemis, includes lunch in Selçuk, and makes carpet and leather workshop visits with no obligation to buy. The private option covers the same principal sites and lunch, with a carpet workshop visit; St John’s Basilica or the Terrace Houses can be requested as optional additions. Check the itinerary details before confirming what is included.
Both are planned for about 5–6 hours. The shared tour is the only one of our shore excursions that mixes parties; the private tour is for your party alone, with a licensed English-speaking guide and an air-conditioned vehicle and driver. Lunch is included where the itinerary says it is. Browse the shared Ephesus and Virgin Mary excursion and the private Ephesus shore excursion.
Your guide meets you at the terminal exit with a name sign, or at the tender landing if your ship anchors. The plan returns you to the pier at least 60 minutes before all-aboard. If the ship is late, the guide waits and reorders or shortens the visit at no extra charge. If the ship skips Kuşadası, you owe nothing.
