This guide covers how to split the days, what to see in each place, the weather, money and packing. It then walks through, step by step, what happens after you book one of our Istanbul–Cappadocia packages. Payment, cancellation and pickup times use the same wording as our tour pages and FAQ.
How many days do you need for Istanbul and Cappadocia?
About five: two or three for Istanbul, then two in Cappadocia. If you only have one day in Cappadocia, take the Red route.
Find the row that matches the days you have. Every product listed is bookable on our site today; our Istanbul and Cappadocia tours page shows them side by side.
| Days you have | How to split them | Matching product (our itinerary) |
|---|---|---|
| 1 spare day | Cappadocia only, by plane from Istanbul | Cappadocia day tour from Istanbul by plane; read the day-trip guide first |
| 4 days | 2 Istanbul days on your own + a 2-day Cappadocia trip | 2 Days Cappadocia Tour from Istanbul (Red and Green, 1 night); or the private 2-day tour |
| 5 days | Arrival, Old City, Bosphorus, then Red and Green in Cappadocia | 5 Days Istanbul and Cappadocia Tour Package (group, four hotel nights) |
| 6–7 days | Istanbul on your own + 3 Cappadocia days (Red, South, Green) | 3 Days Cappadocia Tour Package from Istanbul; or the private 3-day package |
| 7–8 days, private | Istanbul, Cappadocia and Ephesus with your own guides | Private 7-day tour or private 8-day tour |
How many Cappadocia days are enough? Two full days cover the main sights, and a third adds the Green Tour with the Ihlara Valley walk. Our Cappadocia days guide goes through it.
Should you visit Istanbul or Cappadocia first?
Start in Istanbul. Our 5-day group package and our private 7- and 8-day tours all begin at Istanbul Airport (IST) arrivals, and the 5-day package then ends with the Cappadocia days.
One practical detail: the 5-day package ends when you land back in Istanbul after the evening flight (around 20:00, our itinerary). The transfer from Istanbul airport after that flight is not included, so leave that evening free or book a private airport transfer.
How do you get from Istanbul to Cappadocia?
Fly. The flight to Kayseri (ASR) or Nevşehir (NAV) takes about 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes; the road is about 730 km, a long overnight bus ride.
| Flight + your own transfer | Overnight bus | Our package | |
|---|---|---|---|
| How you travel | Your own flight to Kayseri or Nevşehir | About 730 km by road | Economy flights Istanbul ↔ Kayseri or Nevşehir, as in the itinerary |
| What is arranged for you | Nothing | Nothing | Domestic flights, the listed airport transfers, hotels, guided tours |
| What you organise | Ticket, airport transfer, hotel, tours | Ticket, transfers, hotel, tours | Your international flights and the transfer after the return flight |
| How you pay | Each supplier separately | Each supplier separately | Card deposit when you book, balance in cash on arrival |
Flight duration: Turkish Airlines and Pegasus timetables. The full comparison is in Istanbul to Cappadocia: flight or bus, and the airport that suits your hotel is covered in Kayseri or Nevşehir airport to Göreme.
What will you see in Istanbul and in Cappadocia?
In Istanbul, the Old City sights and a Bosphorus cruise. In Cappadocia, the Red and Green routes. This is the order in our 5-day package.
Istanbul, day 2 (Old City). The day covers the Hippodrome, the Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia, Topkapı Palace and the Grand Bazaar, with a licensed English-speaking guide. The guide orders the visits around opening hours and prayer times. Lunch is included. The day also includes a jewellery workshop of about 30–45 minutes, with no obligation to buy. Exploring on your own instead? Our Istanbul Old City in one day guide has a realistic walking route.
- Tickets for the Hagia Sophia upper gallery and for Topkapı Palace including the Harem are not included. You buy them at the entrances; current fees are on muze.gov.tr.
- Topkapı Palace closes on Tuesdays (Ministry of Culture and Tourism leaflet).
- The Grand Bazaar is closed on Sundays and bank holidays (Grand Bazaar visitor information).
Istanbul, day 3 (Bosphorus). You take a Bosphorus cruise with your guide, and the boat ticket is included. Lunch is not included, and the rest of the day is free.
Cappadocia, Red route (day 4). The route covers Devrent Valley, Paşabağ, Avanos and Zelve. It includes a pottery workshop and a carpet weaving centre, about 30–45 minutes each, with no obligation to buy. The Göreme Open-Air Museum is not on this route.
Cappadocia, Green route (day 5). You visit Kaymaklı Underground City, walk about 3.5–4 km through the Ihlara Valley, have lunch in Belisırma and see Selime Monastery. The day includes onyx and leather workshops, about 30–45 minutes each, with no obligation to buy. Expect about 2¾ hours of driving across the day. Choosing between the routes: Red, Green or South.
What is the weather like, and when should you go?
Spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October) are the most comfortable months for sightseeing. Summer is hot; winter suits Istanbul and brings snow to Cappadocia.
Average high / low in °C, from the Turkish State Meteorological Service (MGM) long-term statistics:
| Month | Istanbul (MGM, 1950–2025) | Nevşehir, Cappadocia (MGM, 1959–2025) |
|---|---|---|
| January | 9.6 / 4.2 | 4.0 / −3.6 |
| April | 17.4 / 9.2 | 16.0 / 5.1 |
| July | 29.7 / 20.5 | 28.5 / 13.7 |
| October | 20.6 / 13.7 | 18.3 / 6.8 |
Sources: MGM statistics for Istanbul and Nevşehir. Outside summer, Cappadocia mornings are cool even when the afternoons are warm, and the underground city stays cool all year.
Do you need cash, and which currency?
The local currency is the Turkish lira, and cards are widely accepted in shops and restaurants. Tours paid on the day are paid in cash in euros or US dollars.
On the package, you pay the deposit by card when you book and the balance in cash on arrival. Paying the balance in cash takes 5% off the total.
What should you pack?
- Comfortable closed walking shoes: the valleys and rock-cut sites have uneven ground and steps, and the Old City is a walking day.
- A hat and sunscreen in summer; a warm layer in spring, autumn and winter for cool Cappadocia mornings and the underground city.
- Clothes for mosques: cover shoulders and knees; women also cover their hair, and scarves are usually provided at the entrance.
- The passport you booked with. Airlines check the name on the ticket against it.
- A small day bag. On the last day you check out before the Green Tour, and your guide explains how your luggage travels.
